Gamers who are also big fans of the current “Doctor Who” have long had a bone to pick with the BBC. They’ve been releasing PC and Mac “Adventure Games” free via their website since the beginning of the last series, but are only available for download in the UK. They recently released two of them in the US via Direct2Drive, for a price of $4.95.
However, this will be small consolation for Americans with Wiis and Nintendo DS. BBC Worldwide and Asylum Entertainment have announced that two products will be released this fall – “Doctor Who: Return to Earth” for the Wii and “Doctor Who: Evacuation Earth” for the DS. Amazon.co.uk has the Wii title and the DS title available for pre-order with a release date of Oct. 29 for both. Asylum also says the games are due to be released in Australia and parts of Europe in coming months.
“It is our firm belief that the franchise has massive potential on the Nintendo DS and Wii formats and it’s an honour to be bringing ‘Doctor Who’ video games to the show’s huge fan base,” Asylum Entertainment managing director Simon Bailey in a press release quoted on MTV Multiplayer.
Unfortunately, unless they are willing to buy a UK-coded Wii or DS, Americans have not a glimmer of hope from the producers at this point of seeing these games here at the moment, despite them being produced by BBC Worldwide. It would be safe to assume that the “huge fan base” that made the last DW series the most-watched show on BBC America is assumed to not care enough about video games to bother producing any with US region coding.
